Stony Brook University recently hosted an International Education Week Photo Exhibition, showcasing over 360 photographs from study abroad alumni, incoming exchange students, and international students. The event took place on November 20 and 21 at the Stony Brook Union.

Mariam Isack, assistant dean for International Academic Programs (IAP), emphasized the significance of the exhibition. “This exhibition is about more than just pictures,” she stated. “It’s about sharing stories, celebrating cultural exchange, and engaging our entire campus community in the beauty of global learning. We wanted it to be visible and inclusive, open to everyone.”

The exhibition celebrated diversity through eight categories of photographs. Winners received $50 in Wolfie Wallet dollars, while voting students had a chance to win a $500 credit toward study abroad fees.

Maya Ogando, a senior majoring in economics and political science who studied abroad in Spain during her junior year, was instrumental in organizing the event as a student assistant with IAP. She reflected on her experience: “Studying abroad changed my career goals,” she said. “I want a career that lets me travel and work internationally. Living and studying in Spain taught me independence and opened doors to experiences I never imagined — like skiing in the Alps and riding a camel in Morocco.”

Inspired by similar events at other SUNY campuses, Stony Brook aimed for broader participation. Isack noted their initial expectation: “We initially hoped for at least 50 photos,” she said, adding that they received 361 submissions instead due to enthusiastic participation from students and the campus community.

Winning photos will be displayed in the library and on campus televisions. Ogando encouraged others considering studying abroad: “If you’re thinking about studying abroad, do it,” she advised. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the world while earning credits and paying Stony Brook tuition. You’ll grow in ways you never imagined.”
