Stony Brook University recently hosted an event titled "Color of Your Parachute," aimed at helping students explore their career paths. The event utilized two large, colorful parachutes to engage students in a series of interactive activities designed to prompt reflection on career alternatives and skill sets.

The event took place in SAC Ballroom B and was co-organized by the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Student Engagement & Activities (SEA). Various campus groups, including the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE), Career Center, Undergraduate Research & Creative Activities (URECA), and others, supported the initiative.

Richard Tomczak, director of faculty engagement at DUE, highlighted U-RISE as “a one-stop-shop for anything related to student success at the university.” He emphasized the importance of transformative education that centers on enhancing the student experience.

Marina Fandaros, assistant director for Undergraduate Research Engagement, noted that URECA pairs students with faculty mentors for independent research. She remarked that the parachute event provided a meaningful way for students to engage and explore alongside peers.

Assistant Professor Mei Lin Chan from BME expressed enthusiasm about the strong support from various departments. She appreciated how the event allowed connections with students from diverse majors and interests. Chan also thanked SEA for facilitating campus-wide engagement beyond her department.

Gillian Farnan, assistant director at SEA, praised Dr. Chan's interactive approach: “Working with Dr. Chan is no different. She provided an idea that’s interactive and different than the traditional ways students may be learning how to develop their college careers.”

Students who participated in the event shared positive feedback. Masrurah Morshed '26 described it as motivating and directional: “After the event, I took a big step and began meeting with a career coach.” Mohammad Kader '27 mentioned gaining confidence through connections made during the event.

Simone Binneman from the Career Center summarized that "the activities helped students connect with different departments and on-campus resources in a colorfully memorable and impactful way."

The inspiration for this initiative came from the book "What Color Is Your Parachute?" which encourages readers to align personal preferences with suitable career paths. Peer mentors plan to follow up with participants post-event.
