John Melandro, a teacher at Tangier Smith Elementary School in Mastic Beach, New York, has been honored with the Milken Educator Award. This award is known as the "Oscar of Teaching" and acknowledges educators who demonstrate exceptional excellence in their field. Alongside this recognition, Melandro received an unrestricted $25,000 cash prize.

Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards and a 1994 recipient from Indiana, stated during the presentation: “John Melandro’s commitment to education is evident in every aspect of his classroom. He brings the same enthusiasm to his leadership at the school, helping to advance action plans, enhance character education and involve parents and families in their students’ exciting journeys at Tangier Smith Elementary. It’s no surprise John is known as the ‘Magic Man.’”

Melandro holds a master's degree from Stony Brook University in liberal arts and is currently enrolled in their Educational Leadership program. He attributes his success to Stony Brook faculty members like Alan Baum and Ken Forman for shaping him into an effective leader both inside and outside the classroom.

Expressing gratitude for being chosen as the only New York teacher this year to receive this award after just seven years of teaching, Melandro said: “I am humbled to be selected as the only New York teacher this year to receive the Milken Educator Award.”

Betty A. Rosa, New York State Education Commissioner, extended her congratulations: “Congratulations to John Melandro on receiving the Milken Educator Award. Through his innovative teaching practices, he inspires students and colleagues alike, elevating the entire William Floyd School District community.”

Coming from a family of educators himself, Melandro employs transformative teaching methods that emphasize critical thinking skills through project-based learning while ensuring cultural responsiveness within lessons—leading consistently high student performance outcomes across classrooms where each child feels valued equally regardless of background or ability level.
