Stony Brook University Interim President Richard McCormick recently engaged in a "Fireside Chat" with two members of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) to discuss his vision for the university and his initiatives during his interim presidency. The discussion included Sarah Alberouti, USG vice president of university affairs, and Lamia Rothi, USG vice president of communications.

McCormick expressed enthusiasm for his role, stating, “I wake up every morning happy to go to work. This is the most enjoyable position I’ve ever held.” With a background in U.S. political history and extensive experience in academic leadership roles at institutions like Rutgers University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, McCormick brings significant expertise to Stony Brook.

He highlighted the diverse student body at Stony Brook, noting that “half come from economically disadvantaged families, and about 40 percent qualify for federal Pell Grants,” adding that Pell recipients graduate at slightly higher rates than their peers. McCormick also mentioned the university's increasing popularity with applications rising significantly over recent years.

On undergraduate research opportunities, McCormick advised students to be proactive: “Go to your department chair or professor and ask about research opportunities.” He stressed that research provides essential skills such as teamwork and knowledge creation. While acknowledging STEM's prominence in research at Stony Brook, he emphasized the importance of humanities, social sciences, and arts.

McCormick introduced the Stony Brook Future Scholars Program aimed at mentoring eighth graders from underserved communities. He stated that this initiative not only prepares individuals for college but also has transformative effects on families and communities.

Efforts are underway to enhance collaboration between East Campus health sciences and West Campus departments. Additionally, McCormick is committed to securing funding for improved facilities. His engagement with students extends beyond formal meetings; he attends events like Light the Brook and hosts monthly student dinners.

In conclusion, McCormick aims to maintain Stony Brook’s momentum while fostering its supportive culture: “While I’m here, I’m not just an interim president — I’m the president,” he affirmed. Alberouti found the conversation insightful: “It’s clear you’re passionate about advancing Stony Brook’s mission and connecting with its students.”
