Professor Don Ihde, a prominent figure in the field of phenomenology and the philosophy of technology, was honored posthumously at a memorial conference hosted by Stony Brook University's Department of Philosophy. The event took place in November, organized by Robert Crease, Chair of the Department, and graduate student Juan Arteaga.
Ihde's work is recognized for providing valuable concepts to analyze human experiences with technology. He passed away in January 2024, shortly after his 90th birthday, leaving behind a significant legacy. "Don Ihde was the founder of the Stony Brook philosophy department way back in the early 1970s, so he was a towering figure for us," said Crease. "He also hired me personally, for which I am eternally grateful."
The conference attracted attendees including Ihde’s former students who are now notable philosophers themselves. Judith Lochhead from the Department of Music collaborated with Ihde on phenomenology of music and contributed to the event by playing music and sharing insights into their joint work.
Juan Arteaga expressed admiration for Ihde's influence: "I didn’t have the honor of meeting Don Ihde in person, but I discovered him through his work... I’m proud to have been part of honoring the life, philosophical work, and legacy of this amazing philosopher."
Speakers discussed various aspects of Ihde’s contributions across fields such as science and environmental issues. Peter-Paul Verbeek from the University of Amsterdam attended alongside other international participants.
Crease highlighted Ihde's impact: “He taught me about philosophy of technology that he put me on the track of doing philosophy of technology.” A volume compiling discussions from this conference is planned to further continue Ihde's intellectual legacy.
Crease noted that one former student continues to expand upon Ihde’s work: “One of his students, Robert Rosenberger ’08... is carrying his work forward.”
Reflecting on future prospects, Crease emphasized that Stony Brook will continue to uphold its reputation in philosophy thanks to Ihde's foundational contributions: “We look forward to honoring that again next year.”
