This holiday season, a renewed appeal has been made to Governor Hochul to sign the Grieving Families Act into law. The legislation aims to provide hope for New York families suffering from the loss of loved ones as they enter the new year.
For three consecutive years, the Grieving Families Act has successfully passed both chambers of the State Legislature with wide margins and strong bipartisan support. This level of bipartisan backing is uncommon in today's often contentious and hyper-partisan legislative environment, underscoring the significance of this bill for families across New York.
The proposed law seeks to update New York State’s wrongful death statute, aligning it with standards across the nation. It would enable families who have lost a child or loved one due to wrongful death to seek appropriate damages.
Senator Anthony H. Palumbo expressed his urging sentiment towards Governor Hochul: "Governor Hochul, I implore you to do what is in the best interest of New York’s families and sign this critically important legislation into law."
The decision now rests with Governor Hochul as advocates continue their push for change.
