New York State Senators Dean Murray, Pamela Helming, and George Borrello have submitted a proposal to Governor Hochul aimed at providing inflation relief to residents of New York. The senators are members of the Senate's Commerce, Economic Development, and Small Business Committee. They believe their plan could help alleviate some financial pressures on families and small businesses.
The proposal is designed to offer ongoing savings rather than temporary relief. According to the senators, it targets both consumers and businesses with measures that aim to foster economic stability across the state. The plan includes strategies for reducing living costs and business expenses in New York.
Senator Dean Murray emphasized the importance of lowering costs as a means of inflation relief. He stated that eliminating significant business expenses like the Unemployment Insurance Assessment Surcharge (UIAS) would allow businesses to reduce prices for goods and services, benefiting both consumers and companies.
Senator Pamela Helming highlighted the need for the state to assume full responsibility for its unemployment insurance debt. She noted that reducing business costs is crucial for economic growth and job protection in New York.
Senator George Borrello criticized Governor Hochul's decision not to use federal COVID aid to address unemployment debt, which he believes unfairly burdens businesses through UIAS. He argued that since this deficit resulted from government-mandated shutdowns during the pandemic, employers should not bear these costs alone.
The letter sent by the senators detailing their proposal has been shared with Governor Hochul.
