Daniel Dongvort First Assistant Chief | Smithtown Fire Department
The Smithtown Fire Department has taken steps to better support individuals with autism and other sensory issues during emergency situations. They have introduced sensory kits in their ambulances and first responder vehicles, acknowledging the unique challenges faced by these individuals during high-stress scenarios.
First responders understand that their presence can be overwhelming for autistic individuals, who may not react in typical ways. Sensory items are often used by those with autism, ADHD, and similar conditions to maintain calmness. The new kits aim to provide EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters with additional tools to assist such patients effectively.
These sensory kits include items like noise-reducing earmuffs, a dry erase board with markers, stress balls, fidget spinners, and other fidget toys.
"Any call for an EMS or fire emergency is a stressful one," stated a representative from the department. "Especially when a person calls 911 requesting help with an autistic individual, the stress levels are higher than normal."
By equipping their teams with these resources, the Smithtown Fire Department hopes to improve interactions and outcomes for those requiring special consideration during emergencies.
