Smithtown's volunteer firefighters responded to a structure fire on March 1st at 19 Dartmouth Drive. At 1630 hours, a large smoke column was observed from the direction of the incident, prompting nearby departments to relocate to the area. Upon arrival, 3rd Assistant Chief Daniel Dongvort upgraded the alarm as flames had engulfed the carport and extended into the attic.

The first engine on the scene, Engine 4-2-2, deployed a 1-3/4” line to attack the blaze while Engine 4-2-5's crew stretched a backup line. Mutual aid was provided by St. James, Nesconset, and Hauppauge fire departments. Commack Fire Department and Commack Ambulance were on standby at Smithtown’s Main Firehouse for additional alarms.

Chief of Department Kevin J. Fitzpatrick reported no civilian injuries; however, one firefighter sustained a minor injury. The fire was controlled within an hour under Chief Fitzpatrick's command.

The Town of Smithtown Fire Marshal’s Office and Suffolk Police Arson Squad are investigating the fire's cause.

Units on scene included multiple engines, ladders, rescue vehicles, and ambulances. All units were released by 1842 hours.
