The Smithtown Fire Department has announced the passing of Ex-Chief Richard Keller, a dedicated member who joined in 1965 and served for nearly 58 years. Chief Keller was a charter member of Engine Co. 5, formed in 1966, where he served as Captain for two terms. He also held the position of Chief of the Department from 1981 to 1983.

In addition to his service at Smithtown, Chief Keller worked with the FDNY and concluded his career as a firefighter in Hazmat. His contributions left a significant impact on both the department and the Volunteer Fire Service.

Today marks what would have been Chief Keller's 87th birthday. The department shared, "we are all lucky to have known him and to have worked alongside him." They also wished him a "Happy Heavenly Birthday" and expressed hopes that he will "rest easy."
