Rep. Nick LaLota, representing Suffolk County, has voiced his support for H.R. 28, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. This legislation aims to uphold Title IX by ensuring fair competition in women's and girls' sports.
"As the father of three young girls and husband to a former Division One athlete, I am proud to support the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act," said LaLota. "This commonsense bill ensures that women’s and girls’ sports remain on a level playing field, preserving the integrity of competition and safeguarding the rights of female athletes guaranteed to them under Title IX."
LaLota emphasized that administrative decisions should not unilaterally change Title IX protections. He expressed concerns about biological men competing in women's sports, stating it compromises fairness and denies opportunities for young women.
H.R. 28 mandates compliance with Title IX's intent to protect individuals from sex discrimination based on reproductive biology. It stipulates that biological females compete against each other in sports funded through Title IX.
Title IX is known for banning sex discrimination in educational institutions receiving federal funding, particularly protecting girls from discrimination in sports. In June 2022, the Biden administration proposed changes to prevent schools from discriminating against transgender students. However, this proposal was withdrawn in December 2024 following significant opposition.
The withdrawal highlighted the need for Congress to clarify Title IX's scope to ensure consistent application across different administrations.
