The Avram Theater at Stony Brook Southampton is set to host the Long Island premiere of "Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom." The production will run from January 30 to February 2, with evening shows on Thursday through Saturday and a matinee on Sunday. Tickets are available for $55 online.

Set in 1850, the musical tells the story of an enslaved man's journey towards freedom via the Underground Railroad. Adapted from Akil DuPont's acclaimed short film, it features a score that incorporates Negro spirituals and melodies of freedom. The production has received numerous awards, including “Best Production Winner” at the 2024 New York Theater Festival.

Akil DuPont has garnered recognition throughout his career, earning 31 awards across 44 film festivals and two Student Emmys. His films have been showcased in over 60 countries, and he was named among the top indie filmmakers globally in 2014.

Stony Brook Southampton will host special performances for 600 local high school students as part of its educational mission during Black History Month. This initiative aims to enhance students' understanding of American history.

This event marks a significant return for the Avram Theater, which has been a cultural venue since the 1980s. Wendy Pearson, vice president for strategic initiatives at Stony Brook Southampton, emphasized their commitment to community enrichment through arts and education.

“Productions like Underground reflect our commitment to revitalizing Stony Brook Southampton as a hub for education, community outreach, and cultural enrichment,” said Pearson. She also highlighted partnerships with local businesses like Southampton Inn to support regional arts.

The theater was named after Dr. Morrell “Michael” Avram and Maria Avram, who supported its renovation in 2007. It now hosts various artistic events alongside the adjoining Avram Family Art Gallery.

"Underground: Hear the Sound of Freedom" is presented by Stony Brook Southampton and DuPont Productions LLC, with sponsorship from Southampton Inn.
