Victoria Basharina, a senior at William Floyd High School, has been nominated for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. She is among 25 nominees from New York State, chosen by Betty A. Rosa, New York State Commissioner of Education.

Victoria is part of the general component category and stands out as one of four students from Long Island and two from Suffolk County to receive this recognition this year. Her academic record includes a weighted GPA exceeding 100 and ranking 11th in her class of 767 students. She has completed 13 advanced placement courses.

Ashley Siebert, Victoria's guidance counselor, remarked on her qualities: "In my 23 years as a school counselor, I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of students... but Victoria Basharina is a standout to me."

Having emigrated from Russia in first grade, Victoria attended Moriches Elementary School. Despite challenges adapting to a new country and language, she engaged in community service activities such as volunteering at food drives and tutoring new English learners.

Dr. Martin Palermo praised her achievements: “This nomination... highlights Victoria’s hard work, intellectual curiosity, and passion for learning.” He expressed confidence in her future accomplishments.

Victoria's extracurricular involvement includes participation in the National Honor Society, Youth and Government program where she earned awards like Best Bill and Best Debater. She also contributed to an animatronics project featured in Newsday.

Assemblyman Joseph P. DeStefano extended his congratulations: “Victoria has not only demonstrated academic excellence but has also gone above-and-beyond to demonstrate worthy leadership qualities.”

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to honor distinguished graduating seniors across various fields including arts and career education since its expansion in later years.
