Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY) has announced his support for the Fix Our Forests Act, which includes a provision he introduced to address the southern pine beetle infestation affecting Long Island's Pine Barrens. This nature preserve, spanning 55,000 acres in Suffolk County, NY, is under threat from these pests.
LaLota emphasized the importance of this legislation amid recent environmental challenges on Long Island. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has warned that damage caused by the beetles could increase wildfire risks in the area.
"The Fix Our Forests Act takes crucial steps to stop the southern pine beetle from ravaging the Pine Barrens and worsening Suffolk County’s wildfire threat. We cannot let Long Island become a tinderbox like the wildfires devastating Los Angeles," said LaLota. "The Brookhaven Blaze of 2012 scorched 1,100 acres and forced over 1,000 families to evacuate. Protecting our forests isn’t just about conservation—it’s about keeping our communities safe. We must act now to preserve the Pine Barrens, strengthen our natural defenses, and ensure a healthier, more resilient future."
The legislation aims to streamline National Environmental Policy Act regulations to reduce wildfire risk and improve forest management. It also mandates a comprehensive study on pine beetle outbreaks in the Northeastern United States to guide future actions.
In September 2024, LaLota's amendment directing a study by the Secretary of Agriculture was passed as part of this bill. The House approved it in November.
Between October and November 2024, Suffolk County experienced over 200 brushfires. The Pine Barrens are vital for clean drinking water and endangered species but have been significantly impacted by the beetle infestation.
