In today's digital era, understanding the dynamics of relationships is crucial for both adults and teens. Recognizing red flags in unhealthy relationships and fostering healthy communication are essential skills for building positive futures. Long Island Against Domestic Violence (LIADV) and the Suffolk County Police Department have teamed up to empower individuals by raising awareness about these issues.

On February 6, the Town of Brookhaven will host "The Red Flags of Dating," offering two workshops simultaneously—one tailored for youth and another for parents and adults. The event will take place from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville, NY.

The initiative aims to educate teens on recognizing warning signs of unhealthy or abusive relationships while providing resources for support. Participants will learn about services available through LIADV and the Suffolk County Police Department, emphasizing respect, trust, and communication in relationships.

Key topics include distinguishing between healthy and toxic relationships with a focus on identifying emotional, physical, and verbal abuse signs. Additionally, support services such as counseling, shelter, legal assistance from LIADV, and immediate help from the Suffolk County Police Department will be discussed.

Parents and guardians will receive guidance on engaging in open dialogues with their teens about unhealthy relationships. This involves recognizing warning signs early and encouraging teens to seek help when needed.

Given the rising incidents of dating violence and abuse, equipping families with knowledge is imperative. Through this collaboration between LIADV and the Suffolk County Police Department, the goal is to enable informed decision-making among teens regarding their relationships while building confidence to seek help if necessary.

To register for the event, interested parties can RSVP by contacting Sharon Boyd at [email protected].
