William Floyd High School boys' lacrosse head coach, Desmond Megna, recently achieved his 100th career victory in a match where his team defeated Patchogue-Medford with a score of 10-5. Junior Marc Pluchino contributed significantly with five goals and an assist, while senior Geo Alvarez added two goals and two assists. This win improved the Colonials' season record to 4-1.
"Congratulations to Coach Megna on this milestone achievement," commented Kevin Coster, Superintendent of Schools at William Floyd School District. "He is a highly-regarded teacher, coach, mentor and William Floyd graduate, who bleeds Floyd green. His grit and determination continue to make a difference in the lives of his students and student-athletes on a daily basis."
In 2024, Megna was honored as the "Mike Bowler Man of the Year" by the Suffolk County Coaches Association for his integrity, morals, kindness, honesty, compassion, and love for lacrosse. The award is named after Mike Bowler, the Rocky Point School District lacrosse coach who passed in 2019, known for his lengthy and impactful career.
“It means a lot to be able to win 100 games in this sport at this school,” remarked Coach Megna. “We have garnered a solid reputation in the lacrosse world, one of hard-working young men that play the game the right way and always represent themselves and our community with pride. I’m proud to be part of that,” he added.
Megna expressed gratitude towards his coaching staff, including James Lollo, Jordan Carlock, and Victor Olivero, as well as the William Floyd Athletic Department for their support. He also thanked Superintendent Coster, the Board of Education, and numerous others, including parents, school principals, and colleagues, for their ongoing support. Additionally, he acknowledged his family, particularly his wife Kellie and son Greyson.
The Colonials are scheduled to play next against Huntington away on Monday, April 14, at 4 pm, before returning home to face Brentwood on Wednesday, April 16, at 4 pm.
