The William Floyd High School Youth and Government program recently achieved notable success at the annual New York State YMCA Youth and Government conference in Albany. The event welcomed over 750 student-delegates from across New York State who participated in mock governmental proceedings.

William Floyd students excelled in their presentations, which they prepared over several months. Their accomplishments were recognized with a scholarship, various awards, and six students being elected as statewide officers for next year’s conference. The students elected are Lily Quinn, Joyce Chen, Jibran Akaloo, Erin Chen, Violet Yau, and Muhammad Saad.

Each legislative branch at the conference has two versions: Assembly Liberty and Assembly Freedom; and Senate Liberty and Senate Freedom. The current officers include Olivia Phillips as Governor and others who have represented William Floyd with distinction.

Awards were distributed to various students for categories such as Best Debater and Best Bill, highlighting individual excellence. Jasraj Minhas received the Best Debater award for Assembly Liberty and the Outstanding Delegate award. The Fosdick-San Antonio Scholarship was awarded to Hannah Schultzer.

The William Floyd students were guided by co-advisors Robert Feeney and Alyssa Tepper, with Mr. Feeney mentoring students in government and public policy since 1985. Their dedication is evident in the students' achievements and aspirations.

Several students have also been selected for national conferences occurring later this year. Participants include senior Dua Ali, junior Sarah Foley, and others who will attend the Conference on National Affairs and the National Judicial Competition.
