William Floyd Elementary School recently marked its third anniversary as a "No Place for Hate" designated institution. The school hosted a day-long celebration as part of the anti-bullying program aimed at fostering kindness and inclusivity among students. The event was coordinated by Principal Dr. Keith Fasciana, Assistant Principal Valerie Ennis, and Social Worker Heather Cleary, alongside a student committee of fifth-graders recognized for their responsibility and positive conduct.
The celebration coincided with the school’s annual "Start with Hello" week and included activities centered around the "No Place for Hate" pledge. This pledge encourages inclusion, acceptance, and vigilance against discrimination or bullying. After engaging with the pledge through reading, reciting, and signing, students expressed their commitment by writing or drawing their contributions on colored handprint cutouts.
Heather Cleary commented on the project, saying, “This serves as a visual reminder to our students that our school does not tolerate any type of hate.” These handprints were then displayed alongside a "No Place for Hate" mural created by art teacher Ms. Linda Lutzen.
The student committee also created bilingual versions of the pledge, which were displayed in the hallways. Students showed their support for "No Place for Hate" day by wearing green or clothes with positive messages.
