Stony Brook University (SBU) is set to observe Black History Month in February with a series of events, performances, and discussions. The theme for this year is "African Americans and Labor," focusing on how work has influenced the experiences of Black people throughout history.
Donna-Lee Mahabeer, director of Diversity, Intercultural and Community Engagement (DICE) and co-chair of the Black History Month Committee, emphasized the significance of these celebrations. “Black History Month is an opportunity to create spaces that foster a sense of belonging for those within the Pan-African diaspora,” she stated. “It’s also a chance for others to deepen their appreciation for the culture and engage with the many facets of the diaspora.”
The month-long event is organized by DICE, along with the Department of Africana Studies and the Black History Month Committee. It aims to honor African American and Black heritage while raising awareness about ongoing struggles for equality, inclusion, and social justice.
The festivities will kick off on February 5 with "the Black History Month Student Union Takeover: A Celebration of Culture and Unity!" Hosted by DICE, this event will include performances by student organizations, opportunities to connect with Black student groups, prizes, giveaways, and refreshments sponsored by UNITI Cultural Center and New Student and Transition Programs.
