Andrea Goldsmith, currently the dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University, has been appointed as the seventh president of Stony Brook University. Her appointment was confirmed on February 19 by Merryl H. Tisch, Chairman of The State University of New York (SUNY) Board of Trustees, and SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr., after a unanimous vote by the SUNY Board in New York City. Dr. Goldsmith will officially assume her role on August 1, 2025.
The SUNY Board praised Stony Brook University as "a world-class institution known for its academic excellence and groundbreaking research," highlighting Dr. Goldsmith as "the perfect choice to lead Stony Brook University’s next chapter." Governor Kathy Hochul also expressed support for Dr. Goldsmith's appointment, stating that she is expected to serve Stony Brook admirably.
Dr. Goldsmith brings extensive experience from her roles at R1 universities and her work as an innovator and educator. SUNY Chancellor King commented on her qualifications: “Dr. Andrea Goldsmith’s vast experience...makes her an extraordinary choice to lead this esteemed SUNY institution to new heights.”
In response to her appointment, Dr. Goldsmith said she is honored to join Stony Brook University: “Stony Brook’s commitment to academic excellence...resonates profoundly with my values.”
As president, Dr. Goldsmith will oversee a major R1 university and member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). She will also manage Stony Brook Medicine and contribute to partnerships like those with Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Kevin Law, chairman of the Presidential Search Committee, stated that Dr. Goldsmith stood out due to her vision and expertise: “We are confident she is the ideal choice.” Marilyn Simons praised her strategic thinking abilities while Richard L. Gelfond emphasized that Dr. Goldsmith ensures continuity in excellence at Stony Brook.
Former Stanford President John Hennessy expressed pride in seeing Dr. Goldsmith leading his alma mater: “Her accomplishments...reflect her commitment.”
Dr. Richard McCormick was thanked for serving as interim president during this transition period.
Dr. Goldsmith holds significant credentials including roles at Stanford University and contributions across engineering disciplines with numerous publications and patents under her name.
