John Melandro, a fifth-grade teacher at Tangier Smith Elementary School in Mastic Beach, New York, has been awarded the Milken Educator Award. This award is often referred to as the Oscar of teaching and recognizes outstanding educators for their commitment to excellence in education. Melandro expressed his surprise upon receiving the honor, stating, “It was just absolute disbelief.”

Melandro is one of 45 teachers to receive this accolade this year and is the only recipient from New York. He also marks a first for the William Floyd School District by being its inaugural winner. Along with the recognition, he received a $25,000 unrestricted cash prize.

Teaching runs in Melandro's family; both of his parents were educators and alumni of Stony Brook University, where he earned his master's degree in liberal arts. Despite initially not realizing his calling, Melandro feels deeply connected to his profession. “I love being in a classroom,” he shared. “I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I do every day — which is connect with my students and make an impact on their lives.”

Further insights into Melandro’s journey can be found in a Q&A featured at SB Matters.
