Barbara (Slane) Sapanaro, a distinguished figure in the field of music education, has been honored as a Fine Arts Wall of Distinction Honoree for 2025. From an early age, Barbara was surrounded by music, which became a lifelong passion. Her sister, Nancy Slane, fondly remembers their home filled with music and joyful moments of singing and dancing together.

Barbara began playing the piano at the age of seven and showcased her talent through performances during her school years. As a student at William Floyd High School, she actively participated in various extracurricular activities. She was part of the Rockette dance team, served as a cheerleader, played the oboe, sang as a vocalist, and accompanied on piano. Her high school musical roles included Lucy in "You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown" and Joanne in "Godspell." Additionally, she was part of the marching band featured in the movie "Sweet Liberty" (1986). Barbara graduated from William Floyd High School in 1985.

Pursuing higher education at SUNY Fredonia, Barbara earned a degree in Music Business with a minor in English. She worked for EMI Music Publishing as Director of Creative from 1992 to 2003. After more than a decade in the industry, she transitioned to her true calling—music teaching.

Beginning her teaching career in 2003 as a traveling music teacher before settling at John S. Hobart Elementary School within the William Floyd School District, Barbara dedicated 18 years to inspiring those around her. She mentored new educators and volunteered to guide student teachers. Known for going above and beyond for her school community—whether buying coats for students or dressing up to engage them—she consistently spread joy through music.

Barbara's influence extended beyond immediate teaching; she helped shape future music educators and encouraged children to believe in themselves while guiding them toward their full potential.
