April Coppola President | William Floyd School District
Stan Davis, a notable figure in the field of music education, has been recognized as the Fine Arts Wall of Distinction Honoree for 2025. His career began in the New York City school system before he joined the William Floyd School District in 1966. At that time, he was tasked with initiating the band program at William Floyd Elementary School. The program was initially led by George Lester, Richard Horton, and Ed Pinto. Stan attributes the success of William Floyd's music program to the district's commitment to providing an enriching musical experience for students.
In 1970, as the district expanded into a system comprising elementary, middle, and high schools, Stan transitioned to teaching at the high school level along with the sixth-grade band. He later moved to William Paca Middle School when it opened around 1976 and remained there until his retirement in 1996 after a 30-year tenure.
Stan's educational background includes studies at The Manhattan School of Music where he earned degrees in clarinet and music education. He also holds a Master of Arts from Stony Brook University with an emphasis on music. Beyond teaching, Stan has been active as a clinician, instructor, performer, and conference organizer. He served as past president of the Long Island Recorder Festival which continues today as part of the Suffolk County Music Educators Association.
Additionally, Stan founded Arcadian Press which specializes in music for recorder ensembles. He continues to perform with various ensembles including Island Winds Chamber Ensemble and Northport Community Band. Stan splits his time between Northport and Ulster County in New York with his wife Mary.
