The Finance & Administration Alliance for Culture, Diversity & Inclusion at Stony Brook University has been actively organizing events to celebrate the diverse cultural backgrounds of its 1,200+ staff members. These efforts aim to foster unity and inclusivity among employees.
In January, the Alliance hosted a cultural exploration event featuring a film discussion led by Zebulon Vance Miletsky, associate professor of Africana Studies. The session focused on the film "Judas and the Black Messiah," exploring themes of racial justice and political resistance in 1960s America.
On February 12, a Global New Year’s Traditions lunch was held at the Charles B. Wang Center. This event marked the end of the Chinese New Year with traditional foods from around the world, offering staff an opportunity to connect and broaden their cultural experiences.
Jed Shivers, senior vice president for Finance and Administration at Stony Brook, highlighted the university's commitment to diversity: “One of the hallmarks of our university is celebrating what makes each member of our Seawolf community unique,” he stated. He emphasized that team members come from various professional backgrounds and contribute significantly to campus life.
Alexandra Rose from the Office of Communications and Marketing shared her personal connection to these initiatives: “Both of my parents are from Haiti,” she said. She expressed gratitude for being part of a community that values unity and collaboration despite challenges.
Looking ahead, the Alliance plans a women's workwear clothing donation in March for Women’s History Month. This initiative will support a local Dress for Success chapter by providing professional attire to women entering or advancing in their careers.
