The Fellowship Foundations Program for University Honors Programs concluded on January 31 with an in-person session. This session followed four virtual meetings held over the winter break, aimed at preparing students for fellowship opportunities such as the Fulbright Program. The program involved 19 students who gained insights into application and interview processes.
Catherine Sherman, assistant dean for University Honors Programs, opened the final session with encouragement. She advised students to "reflect and refine how you tell your story and be your authentic self." Sherman highlighted the importance of sharing unique perspectives and taking pride in their efforts, even when facing setbacks.
A significant part of the session was mock interviews simulating a Fulbright committee setting. Students interacted with faculty members Sarah Jourdain, Kristina Lucenko, Eva Nagase, Karen Kernan, and Jennifer Albanese. Leah Dannehy found value in presenting to actual committee members, noting that it inspired her to do more after hearing others' pitches.
The day also included discussions on other fellowship opportunities led by Vernon Caldwell and undergraduate research opportunities presented by Marina Fandaros. The event ended with a toast and gifts from Ashley Staples.
Rachel Alexandre appreciated working with Ashley Staples and Vernon Caldwell on fellowship applications. She found practicing interview skills beneficial. Johanna Stefanakis felt that participating allowed her to explore interests in new ways.
Staples emphasized practice's role in success: "Your choice to be involved...will support your success as you work on fellowship applications." The program provided practical tools while fostering community among participants.
