Farmingville, NY - The Town of Brookhaven has opened registration for the 17th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up. Supervisor Dan Panico encourages residents to participate in this event, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 17 at various locations throughout the town. This initiative is part of a national campaign co-sponsored by the Town's Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc.
The clean-up effort is part of a larger movement involving over 5 million volunteers across more than 20,000 communities in the United States. These volunteers work together to remove litter from roadways, rivers, lakes, and other areas. Residents can register online or get more information by contacting the Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management at 631-451-TOWN (8696).
Statistics show that there are over 50 billion pieces of litter on the ground nationwide. However, there has been a significant decrease in roadside littering by 54% over the past decade. Last year alone saw more than 64,000 clean-up events in the US, resulting in over 146,600 acres of parks and public spaces being cleaned.
Supervisor Panico stated: “The Great Brookhaven Clean Up is one of our most popular and important events of the year. It is a good opportunity for people to remove trash and make a difference in their community. This event has been a great success thanks to the efforts of our residents and their dedication to keeping Brookhaven clean.”
Volunteers will receive free gloves, trash bags, and t-shirts provided by the Town. Supplies can be picked up at the Department's office on the third floor of Town Hall from May 5 to May 17 during regular business hours from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Evening pick-ups are also available on May 14 and May 15 from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Brookhaven Town Hall located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.
