Stony Brook University will observe Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month this April, highlighting the diverse culture of Asian Americans. The campus community will showcase the traditions and history of people of Asian descent through various programs, performances, and discussions.

The events planned for the month include a range of cultural experiences. "Himalayan Fest" will kick off on March 30 at the LDS Bauman Center with an evening dedicated to culture, cuisine, and performances. On April 2, the Health Sciences Library will host "Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month Galleria Day," featuring a gallery that honors Asian pioneers in health science professions.

On April 3, OiYan Poon, known for her work on race and education, will speak at the Charles B. Wang Center Theatre. Her talk is titled “‘Mama, Are we Black or White?’ and Other Intergenerational Conversations for Freedom.” She will discuss how conversations with her daughter about race inspired her book "Asian American Is Not a Color: Conversations About Race, Affirmative Action, and Family." Admission is free with an online RSVP.

Later in the month, on April 24, the Asian Students Alliance will present the "All Across Asia Fashion Show" at SAC Ballroom A. The event promises performers, activity stations, and food offerings.

The celebration concludes with "Sakura Matsuri: Cherry Blossom Festival" on April 27 at the Charles B. Wang Center. Attendees can enjoy taiko drums, koto plays, traditional Japanese dances, martial arts demonstrations, bonsai workshops, calligraphy workshops, ikebana flower arrangement sessions, tea workshops as well as manga drawing and origami paper folding activities. There will also be kimono dress-ups and cosplay opportunities available for all ages.

Further details about these events can be found on the AAPI Heritage Month website which includes resources related to AAPI culture.
