Gábor Balázsi, a professor at Stony Brook University, has been named a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). He attended the induction ceremony on March 31 in Arlington, Virginia. The 2025 Class of College Fellows at AIMBE consists of 171 scientists from around the world.
AIMBE Fellow status is one of distinction among medical and biological engineers, recognizing four Nobel Prize laureates and 27 Presidential Medal of Science and Technology and Innovation recipients. Additionally, many AIMBE Fellows have been inducted into national academies, reflecting their contributions.
Balázsi, who holds positions in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and is affiliated with the Stony Brook Cancer Center, was recognized “for pioneering contributions to apply engineering principles to design protein-level tuning synthetic gene circuits, and to identify mechanisms for their evolution,” as stated by AIMBE. Since joining Stony Brook in 2014, his research has focused on synthetic gene circuits and their role in biological processes.
Balázsi's work has been published in approximately 50 academic journals, including notable publications such as Nature Communications and Cell. He is an active member of multiple scientific organizations, including the American Physical Society and the American Association for Cancer Research.
The AIMBE College of Fellows, which Balázsi joins, includes nearly 3,000 members who have significantly impacted the fields of medical and biological engineering. These fellows come from various sectors, including academia and industry, from over 30 countries.
