Stony Brook University Interim President Richard L. McCormick visited Washington, D.C., on April 2 to meet with New York's congressional delegation and their senior staff. The purpose of the visit was to advocate for federal priorities that benefit both Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine.

McCormick emphasized the importance of federal funding for science research, higher education programs, student financial aid, and support for public-safety net hospitals. According to McCormick, these issues are crucial for Stony Brook and the wider academic and healthcare community.

Central to McCormick's message was the call for significant federal investment in scientific research and opposition to proposed research funding cuts. "Cuts to federal research funding send a dangerous signal that our nation could walk away from the very advancements that have propelled America as a global leader in science and technology," said McCormick. He highlighted the longstanding partnership between the federal government and U.S. research institutions that has positioned America as a leader in scientific innovation.

McCormick also drew attention to the need for substantial funding for higher education programs and federal student financial aid. He discussed with policymakers the importance of maintaining federal investments to keep higher education affordable and accessible. He noted that federal student aid programs like Pell Grants and student loans play a critical role in assisting students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in achieving their academic and professional aspirations.

With more than a third of Stony Brook students receiving Pell Grants, McCormick emphasized the importance of these programs in helping students realize their potential and contribute to the workforce.

In the healthcare sector, McCormick advocated for ongoing federal support for public-safety net hospitals, such as Stony Brook University Hospital, which provides essential healthcare services to underserved populations. He argued that federal funding is crucial for these hospitals to continue offering high-quality care and ensuring that healthcare remains accessible to all communities.

McCormick also connected with Stony Brook alumni working on Capitol Hill, providing updates on the university's priorities and progress while strengthening the Stony Brook network in Washington, D.C.

This visit is part of a broader federal advocacy initiative led by Stony Brook University's Office of Federal Relations in conjunction with SUNY's D.C. Office, aimed at advancing federal priorities for Stony Brook. The Office of Federal Relations plans to continue its collaboration with the New York congressional delegation, federal agencies, the Administration, and national higher education and research associations to advocate for support in higher education programs, student financial aid, science research, and public hospitals.
