Rep. Nick LaLota has expressed his support for the bipartisan "Stop Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act" by becoming a co-sponsor. The legislation aims to provide financial relief to U.S. citizens who have been wrongfully detained or held hostage abroad. It seeks to eliminate tax penalties for these individuals and extends this relief to their spouses during the detention period. Additionally, the bill includes provisions for retroactive reimbursement for those who have already paid such penalties after their release.
LaLota believes the bill will help individuals like Kai Li, a U.S. citizen from Suffolk County who was detained by the Chinese Communist Party for eight years. Released in 2024, Li faced what LaLota considers unjust financial burdens as he attempted to reintegrate into American life.
“Our duty to fight for Americans unjustly detained abroad does not end when they return home. This bill takes a critical step in addressing an ongoing injustice they may face, specifically the unfair tax burdens imposed by our own nation. No American should be financially penalized for their inability to pay taxes while wrongfully imprisoned, nor should their family,” said LaLota.
Kai Li's ordeal began in 2016 when he was arrested in Shanghai for “state security charges.” After prolonged detention without legal counsel, he was convicted of espionage in a secret trial in 2018. LaLota has actively supported the Li family since taking office, calling for Kai's release and raising awareness about his situation and other human rights abuses by the Chinese government. His efforts included sending letters to President Biden and Secretary Blinken, highlighting these issues and pushing for diplomatic actions to secure Kai's release.
LaLota continues his advocacy by sponsoring amendments and engaging with U.S. and Chinese officials to support the release of detained Americans in China. With this bill, LaLota aims to address the issues faced by American hostages like Kai Li, ensuring that, upon their return, they aren't faced with undue financial stress.
