Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, alongside his colleagues, has joined a bipartisan effort for the immediate passage of "Melanie’s Law" to strengthen domestic violence protections. The push for the passage of the law comes in response to the tragic loss of Melanie Chianese, who was a victim of domestic violence. Speaking at a press conference in the New York state Capitol, DeStefano emphasized the importance of enacting Melanie’s Law without further delay.

DeStefano highlighted the urgency of passing the law, stating, "We continue to advocate for Melanie’s Law because it has not yet passed, a true disservice to those it could shield from harm." He underscored the need for immediate action by referencing the tragic loss of Melanie Chianese and the flaws in the current legislation that could have been prevented with a more inclusive law.

The Assemblyman stressed the significance of honoring Melanie's memory by safeguarding others and preventing similar tragedies. He pointed out that domestic violence impacts not only the immediate parties involved but also extends to children, parents, and even pets. DeStefano emphasized the power of state leaders to combat domestic violence and expressed his pride in supporting Melanie’s Law alongside his colleagues.
