Suffolk County recently released an update on COVID-19 statistics, highlighting key information related to hospitalization rates and fatalities. According to the CDC, hospital admission rates and the percentage of COVID-19 deaths among all deaths are now the primary surveillance metrics.
In the report, it was noted that hospitals in the county are no longer providing data to the NYSDOH on weekends or holidays, affecting the frequency of updates.
On April 4, 2024, Suffolk County reported that there were 42 individuals hospitalized, with 62% of them being hospitalized due to COVID-19 or complications of COVID-19. There were 4 new admissions and 4 discharges since the last report. Additionally, there were 8 patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
The county also provided data on COVID-19 hospitalizations for the week ending March 30, 2024, showing a low level of hospital admissions with 94 new hospital admissions of confirmed COVID-19 patients. The percent change of hospital admissions from the prior week was -11.3%, with hospital admissions per 100k in the past week being 3.3.
Regarding fatalities, as of April 4, 2024, there have been a total of 5,274 fatalities in Suffolk County since March 2020, representing an increase of 1 since the last report. The annual breakdown of fatalities showed a decrease over the years, with 2020 having the highest number of fatalities at 2,311 and 2024 having 128 fatalities to date.
The county also shared information on COVID-19 testing, with 61 new first-time cases reported on April 2, 2024. The COVID-19 testing tracker indicated 4.0 cases per 100k and 3.5 on a 7-day average, including reported PCR and antigen tests.
Residents were encouraged to utilize vaccination clinics and testing facilities provided by the county, with options available for uninsured and underinsured individuals through New York State's Vaccines for Children program and Vaccines for Adults program.
As the county continues to monitor and assess the impact of COVID-19, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and others.
