Michelle Sands, Registered Dental Hygienist and Silent Night Therapy’s Sleep Apnea Director, said that as muscles relax, airways can become obstructed during sleep, leading to irregular breathing patterns.
"Nasal breathing is considered the optimal method of breathing, as it helps filter and humidify the air before it reaches the lungs," said Sands. "Breathing through the mouth bypasses these natural filtration mechanisms, leading to inflammation and irritation of the airway tissues. This can manifest as increased snoring, enlarged tonsils, a red or swollen throat, and other related symptoms. During sleep, as the muscles relax, including the tongue, these inflamed tissues can further obstruct the airway, leading to episodes of apnea or interrupted breathing."
Breathing patterns can play a role in the management and treatment of sleep apnea. According to the Mayo Clinic, sleep apnea is a condition characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep, often resulting from obstructed airways. These interruptions lead to poor sleep quality and decreased oxygen levels in the blood. Understanding and correcting breathing patterns can mitigate the adverse effects of sleep apnea. The clinic notes that improving breathing techniques through various therapies can enhance airflow and reduce the frequency of apnea episodes.
Effective breathing patterns can help maintain consistent oxygen levels and prevent the cardiovascular strain associated with sleep apnea. Techniques such as nasal breathing exercises and positional therapy can help maintain an open airway during sleep. The American Heart Association notes that proper breathing patterns can reduce the likelihood of airway collapse, thus decreasing the risk of hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. These techniques, alongside traditional treatments like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, can improve sleep quality and overall health.
Silent Night Therapy not only focuses on a patient’s breathing but addresses their overall well-being. "As we transition towards airway-centric dentistry, we're ensuring that every treatment we provide takes the patient's airway into account," said Sands. "This approach represents a more holistic perspective on dentistry."
Incorporating breathing exercises and mindful breathing practices into daily routines can also have a positive impact on sleep apnea management. The National Sleep Foundation reported that practices such as diaphragmatic breathing and specific breathing exercises designed to strengthen the respiratory muscles can help maintain airway patency during sleep. By focusing on and improving breathing patterns, individuals with sleep apnea can achieve better control over their condition, leading to enhanced sleep quality, reduced health risks, and improved overall well-being.
According to the Silent Night Therapy website, Sands entered the practice in 2011, bringing with her over 25 years of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist. Currently, she holds the position of Sleep Apnea Director.
