Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, NY, has been awarded The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification. This recognition reflects the hospital's commitment to maintaining high standards of patient care and safety.

The certification is offered in partnership with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and covers all stages from pre-surgical consultations to post-operative follow-ups. Mather Hospital underwent a thorough review process on January 29-30, 2025. A reviewer from The Joint Commission assessed the hospital's adherence to certification standards, which include program management and clinical care facilitation.

Ken Grubbs, DNP, MBA, RN, from The Joint Commission stated: “Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement Certification recognizes healthcare organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care.” He commended Mather Hospital for reducing variations in clinical processes.

Kevin McGeachy, President of Mather Hospital, expressed pride in receiving the certification. “The certification demonstrates to our patients that Mather adheres to the best practices of quality, safety, and better patient outcomes,” he said.

Orthopedic surgeon Brian McGinley highlighted the collaborative efforts involved in achieving this certification. Michael Fracchia, MD, director of Mather’s orthopedic program, noted that since 2001 Mather surgeons have utilized computer or robotic-assisted surgery for total joint procedures. “Mather surgeons were the first in the country to perform robotic-assisted total knee replacements,” he added.
