Northwell Cancer Institute has introduced Varian Ethos radiation therapy with HyperSight imaging technology at its centers in Greenlawn and Lake Success, marking the first availability of this technology on Long Island. This advancement is aimed at improving precision and effectiveness for cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy.

The HyperSight technology offers high-quality daily pre-treatment imaging in a single six-second breath hold, which enhances the ability of radiation oncologists to accurately target tumors. The Ethos system includes adaptive radiation therapy, allowing real-time adjustments based on tumor response and changes in normal anatomy. This approach optimizes treatment accuracy while reducing exposure to healthy tissue and minimizing side effects by using artificial intelligence and rapid on-table imaging.

“With the introduction of the new technology, we’re offering patients access to the most modern and fastest imaging and treatment technology available anywhere in the world,” said Heather Zinkin, MD, chief of radiation oncology at Huntington Hospital. She highlighted that patients benefit from a seamless care experience by consulting with their oncologist, planning, and receiving treatment all in one location close to home.

The Greenlawn center has undergone significant renovations as part of a $4 million investment. These include a second treatment vault, modernized waiting area, updated restrooms, expanded changing rooms, additional exam rooms, and office space improvements. The enhancements aim to provide a more comfortable environment for cancer patients.

A new CT simulator has also been introduced at Greenlawn to offer the latest imaging technology. It aids in treatment planning by providing detailed images that guide oncologists and physicists in developing customized protocols. It also features 4D capability for tracking tumor motion.

At Lake Success's R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center, the Ethos and HyperSight technologies enhance what is one of the largest radiation therapy centers in the region. The total investment there amounted to $5.1 million.

“Northwell’s Radiation Medicine Department has a long history of investing in the latest radiation therapy technology," stated Louis Potters, MD, SVP and deputy physician-in-chief at Northwell Health Cancer Institute. "We were the first in New York State to offer HyperSight at Lenox Hill Hospital and are thrilled to now offer extraordinary imaging and treatment technology on Long Island.” He noted that this new technology not only ensures precision but also enhances patient comfort with an average on-table time of 10 minutes or less.
