Healthier U is offering an opportunity for individuals interested in running through its 2024 “Couch to 5K” program. The initiative aims to assist participants of all fitness levels in preparing for a 5k run or walk.

An informational session will be conducted virtually on Zoom on Friday, September 6, from 12 pm to 1 pm. Interested individuals can register online and will receive a Zoom link upon registration.

Participants in the program will have the chance to evaluate their progress at the second annual Wolfie Dash 5K, scheduled for Sunday, October 27, as part of Homecoming Weekend. This event includes a campus-based 5K run and a one-mile kids' fun run. It is free and open to all members of the Stony Brook University community.

“I am nervous about running — I turned 50 this year so my metabolism, body… everything is different,” said SBU employee Jeanmarie Ricciardi. “I’ve never been a runner, but I have always wanted to be. Even if this jump starts some sort of exercise routine for me, it will be worth it.”

The “Couch to 5K” running program was established by Josh Clark over two decades ago with the goal of encouraging reluctant potential runners to begin exercising. Since its inception, it has gained global popularity with millions adopting it into their routines.

No prior running experience is necessary; only a willingness to commit to achieving personal fitness goals.
