The Stony Brook University community gathered for CommUniversity Day on September 28, despite overcast skies and light showers. The event attracted nearly 2,500 attendees who explored various aspects of the campus through interactive activities, entertainment, and educational exhibits.

CommUniversity Day offered visitors a chance to experience the university's offerings through themed 'neighborhoods.' Attendees immersed themselves in different aspects such as 'Tech and Discovery,' 'Arts,' and 'Community Partners.' Interim President Richard McCormick stated, “The deep synergy between Stony Brook University and our community is strong, and we’re always exploring more ways to serve and engage the people of Long Island and beyond.”

Heather Banoub, assistant vice president for Community Relations, commented on the turnout: “To have such a wonderful turn-out in spite of the less than perfect weather is a testament to how CommUniversity Day has become a beloved tradition for our community.”

In the ‘Health’ neighborhood, participants engaged with students from the Physical Therapy program and learned about heart health from Heart Institute staff. Daphne Caceres-Paladino emphasized its importance: “This event is a great opportunity for us to reach out to the community and build awareness of unrecognized signs for heart attacks.”

Safety demonstrations were provided by Stony Brook Fire Marshal in the ‘Safety’ neighborhood. Guests also attended ‘Find Out in 15’ sessions where students showcased research projects across various topics.

The ‘Tech and Discovery’ area featured physics demonstrations by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Lisa Hernandez from Bayport shared her family’s experience: “I bring my kids each year... I hope that when they are college age, they will look to Stony Brook as an option.” Her son Joey added his favorite part was "the free candy."

A new addition this year was a LEGO® competition showcasing creative visions of community. The event supported Island Harvest Food Drive with attendees contributing nonperishable food items.

Banoub highlighted other attractions: “It was wonderful to see so many families creating at the LEGO® Discovery Tent... From performances by cheerleading team...to vast number of participants in Health Neighborhood.”

CommUniversity Day coincided with Stony Brook Family Weekend, concluding with a football game against Morgan State Bears where Seawolves triumphed 22-3.
