Professor Jeff Ge from the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been honored with the Dedicated Service Award by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). This award is a recognition of his voluntary service and contributions to the society.
The award acknowledges “outstanding performance, demonstrated effective leadership, prolonged and committed service, devotion, enthusiasm, and faithfulness.” Ge was presented with this honor during the 2024 ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences held in Washington, DC, from August 25 to 28.
“Jeff Ge was awarded the ASME Dedicated Service Award for his sustained contributions and visionary leadership in ASME’s Design Engineering Division, and Mechanisms and Robotics Executive Committees, and in support of the ASME Robotics community,” said Gloria Wiens. She chairs the ASME Robotics Technology Group that nominated Ge for this accolade. Wiens added that “Most recently, as a founding member of ASME’s Technical and Engineering Communities: Robotics Technology Group, Jeff took a lead role in the Group’s writing of the ASME Robotics Roadmap to be published this fall.”
Ge's involvement with ASME includes participation in various committees such as the Executive Committee of the ASME Design Engineering Division from 2015 to 2021. He also served as Committee Chair in 2020. Additionally, he has been part of the executive committee for Mechanisms and Robotics within ASME for three years.
Apart from his committee work at ASME, Ge has organized numerous technical sessions at their conferences. His contributions extend beyond society activities; he has over 160 peer-reviewed publications in journals and conference proceedings. He is recognized as one of the pioneers who integrated kinematics with computational geometry.
Ge's dedication has earned him several awards previously. Before receiving this year's award, he was honored with an earlier Dedicated Service Award by ASME in 2023. Other accolades include the AT Yang Memorial Award for Theoretical Kinematics (2022) and the Mechanisms and Robotics Award (2021).
Expressing gratitude upon receiving this award, Ge stated: “I am honored and humbled by the award.” He reflected on his long association with ASME since attending his first Design Engineering Annual Conference as a graduate student in 1990.
Ge is not only a founding member of the ASME Technology Group on Robotics but also serves as co-editor for their Journal of Mechanical Design since 2021. Currently, he holds the position of inaugural editor-in-chief for their new publication titled Letters in Translational Robotics.
