Stony Brook University hosted its first Town Hall on October 2, organized by the Collaborative for the Earth (C4E). The event gathered faculty and staff from various disciplines to explore interdisciplinary approaches to addressing climate change. C4E Director Heather Lynch emphasized the importance of collaboration across fields, stating, "The environmental challenges of tomorrow are not going to be solved by the straightforward application of disciplinary knowledge but rather from the creative synthesis of multiple areas of expertise."

Established in September 2023, C4E aims to build a cross-campus community focused on climate change and environmental issues. Since its inception, Lynch has facilitated interest groups and events such as a forum on offshore wind power. She also hosts a podcast titled “C4E Presents,” featuring Stony Brook’s scholars discussing climate change.

Later this month, C4E plans a field trip to Block Island Offshore Wind Farm for students and faculty. This initiative aligns with Stony Brook's role as an anchor institution of The New York Climate Exchange. Kevin Reed, associate provost for climate and sustainability programming at Stony Brook, noted that hiring and activities are underway at the Exchange. He mentioned future opportunities for faculty to engage with Governor’s Island facilities before their expected completion in 2028.

Reed also discussed plans for a spring semester field trip to Governor’s Island aimed at fostering dialogue about climate solutions. In addition, C4E is involved in presenting “Science on Stage: Climate Edition,” where researchers collaborate with playwrights to create plays focusing on climate research. This event will take place on October 28 at Staller Recital Hall.

Lynch highlighted the need for diverse collaborations among experts in different fields: "We need climate modelers talking with ecologists and social scientists talking with public health experts." She expressed enthusiasm about the engagement shown during the Town Hall.

C4E has scheduled two more town halls for further participation from students, faculty, and staff in shaping future research initiatives at Stony Brook University.
