Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH) has been recognized as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Stroke Care by Healthgrades® for the tenth consecutive year, making it the only hospital in New York State to achieve this distinction from 2016 to 2025. Healthgrades' ratings focus on clinical outcomes, such as risk-adjusted mortality and complications, providing essential feedback for both patients and hospitals.

This recognition follows Stony Brook University Hospital's achievement as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2024, the sole hospital on Long Island to receive this honor. Stony Brook Southampton Hospital also shares in this recognition. Healthgrades evaluates approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide based solely on patient outcomes, placing Stony Brook among the top hospitals for specialty care.

Carol A. Gomes, Chief Executive Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital, stated, “These achievements reflect our steadfast commitment to the consistent delivery of outstanding clinical outcomes for critical services across the medical system enterprise — all for our patients, their families and the community.”

A Healthgrades analysis indicated that if all hospitals performed similarly to five-star hospitals during the 2021-23 study period, an average of 224,958 lives could potentially have been saved and 141,692 complications avoided.

Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer and head of data science at Healthgrades commented, “Healthgrades commends Stony Brook University Hospital for their clear commitment to delivering consistently superior patient outcomes in critical service areas.” He added that SBUH's leadership and dedication set a high standard for specialty care both in New York State and nationwide.

Stony Brook University Hospital is Long Island’s premier academic health center with various specialized institutes and centers serving as a Regional Trauma Center and offering comprehensive care across multiple disciplines.
