Tremayne Winfield, a 39-year-old resident of Amityville, has been sentenced to 17 years to life in prison. The sentence follows a jury finding him guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and related charges for having a loaded firearm.
Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney stated, "The sentence handed down to this defendant reflects the gravity of his offenses and our commitment to removing dangerous individuals from our streets." He added that they believe this outcome will deter others and contribute to community safety in Suffolk County.
The trial evidence revealed that on April 28, 2023, Suffolk County Police executed a search warrant at a Bay Shore residence. During the search, officers discovered Winfield with a loaded 9 mm handgun equipped with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds.
On June 21, 2024, after being tried before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins, Winfield was found guilty of one count of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (a Class C felony) and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree (Class D felonies).
Winfield's prior convictions include several felonies in Suffolk County: criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree (a Class C violent felony), assault in the second degree (a Class D violent felony), criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree (a Class D felony), and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree (a Class A misdemeanor).
