New York State Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano has recognized April Coppola, president of the William Floyd Board of Education, as a "Woman of Distinction." This honor is awarded to seven women from the Third Assembly District who have made significant contributions to their communities.

Assemblyman DeStefano praised the honorees for their dedication, stating, “All seven of these women have shown remarkable commitment…to bettering our local communities. Let us recognize all seven of these women for all their hard work to serve our wonderful communities to the best of their ability.”

The list of honorees includes Jodi Meyer Moran, Denise Nostrom, Danielle Paisley, Linda Piotrowski, Nerina Sperl, and Amy Thomas alongside Mrs. Coppola. DeStefano emphasized the impact these women have had on Suffolk County: “Women of Distinction are the folks who really make a difference in our community. They go out and do the right thing, day in and day out, without expecting anything in return."

April Coppola has been a member of the Board of Education since 2016 and has served as its president since 2022. A lifelong resident and graduate of William Floyd High School (Class of 1984), she actively participates in various local organizations aimed at community improvement.

Her involvement includes roles with the William Floyd Community Summit as treasurer and chairperson of the Beautification Committee; serving on the board for the Chamber of Commerce of the Mastics and Shirley since 2014; and being part of the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association's board. Her efforts extend to organizing events like flower planting projects and community clean-ups.

As an advocate for education within her district, Coppola supports programs that prepare students for future success. Under her leadership, William Floyd schools have seen improvements such as increased graduation rates reaching 90%, reduced tax levies by over $23 million across two years, improved bond ratings, and successful capital project referendums enhancing school facilities.

Coppola continues to focus on advancing opportunities for students while maintaining fiscal responsibility within her district.
