The Campus Beautification Committee (CBC) at Stony Brook University has been actively enhancing the university's environment throughout the year. The committee focused on incorporating student-created and community-driven art projects across campus.
A significant project involved alumnus Boxin Yao, who designed a "mandala" that was later colored by students, faculty, and staff. This piece is now displayed at the Student Health Services/Counseling and Psychological Services Center. Yao stated that the mandala symbolizes hope and healing in ancient Chinese culture.
In March, Norah Allam, a student artist majoring in biomedical engineering and applied mathematics and statistics, completed an octopus mural titled 'Le Judicieux' at Endeavor Hall for the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences. The CBC celebrated her work alongside SoMAS professors later in the fall.
Another notable project was a mural at the Life Sciences Greenhouse Retaining Wall by Trinity Hausch, a biochemistry major and president of the Greenhouse Club. This artwork aims to raise awareness about eco-friendly research conducted at Stony Brook University.
Student artist Sy Lee installed his 'Water Droplet' sculpture at Melville Library’s North Reading Room. Lee aimed to create a welcoming environment for students while promoting collaboration among them.
Ellie Mei Lu collaborated with the Origami Club to create ‘Harmony’s Grasp’ Origami Flag at Charles B. Wang Center after a campus crane-a-thon event where 300 paper birds were crafted by students, faculty, and staff.
Emma Ehrhard, a communications major, shared her artistic vision with CBC for a mural in front of the Educational Communications Center during the fall semester. Many community members participated in painting her design.
During CommUniversity Day, LEGO enthusiasts participated in creating a unique mural at the Office of Government and Community Relations through collaborative efforts during a LEGO competition.
At Homecoming in October, students painted a large mural on the Sports Complex wall facing LaValle Stadium as part of CBC's initiative to beautify campus spaces in partnership with the Department of Athletics.
The Greenhouse Club contributed to visual enhancements around the Life Sciences building by planting native species curated by Sean Halliwell from shrubby St. John’s wort to Beach Plum as part of their educational goals about greenhouse activities.
With numerous successful projects completed this year, CBC plans further collaborations across campus for future initiatives. Those interested in participating can propose projects or volunteer their expertise through available forms provided by CBC.
