On December 18, Stony Brook University's Vice President for Research, Kevin Gardner, visited Washington, DC to advocate for increased federal funding for science research in the fiscal year 2026. Accompanied by Assistant Vice President for Federal Relations Lauren Brookmeyer, Gardner engaged with congressional members and staff, Department of Defense officials, and notable alumni from Stony Brook University based in Washington.
Gardner emphasized the importance of federal support to drive scientific innovation and address global challenges. He stated, "We are at a pivotal moment in science and innovation. To maintain America’s technological leadership we must prioritize funding that supports a broad range of scientific fields." Gardner highlighted the necessity of strong investments in research to facilitate groundbreaking discoveries crucial to national security, healthcare, and the economy.
His visit occurred as Congress prepared to discuss the federal budget for FY26. Gardner stressed that continued investment in research and development is essential for maintaining U.S. competitiveness on the global stage. "For the U.S. to maintain superiority in the innovation race, particularly in competition with nations like China, robust investments in science and research is non-negotiable," he said.
The meetings were organized by Stony Brook University's Office for Federal Relations and aimed to strengthen relationships with key stakeholders while advancing the university's federal priorities.
