The William Floyd boys’ varsity wrestling team, under the guidance of head coach Tony Mecca, has made a strong start to their 2024-25 season. During the first month of competition, the Colonials have participated in several tournaments and League I matchups.
Their tournament schedule began with the 17th Annual Takedown Autism Tournament at William Floyd High School. The Colonials achieved a 4-0 record as a team by defeating Glen Cove, Smithtown West, Bay Shore, and Islip. Jack Meyer and Josiah Lors remained undefeated individually while six other wrestlers, including David Barrera, David Gonzalez, Caleb Holmes, Jayvyn Johnson, Patrick Lospinuso, and Jonathan Reyes each recorded a 3-1 performance. The event raised $1,500 for Rise Life Services, an organization that “provides a residential and supported living environment to empowering people with intellectual disabilities and mental health challenges and rise to their full potential.”
In the Commack Classic Tournament, the Colonials secured second place overall behind Commack. Jack Meyer (131 lbs.) and Josiah Lors (215 lbs.) both claimed first place in their brackets. Antonio Martin (160 lbs.) finished second in his bracket. Additionally, Caleb Holmes (124 lbs.), Achilles Jordan (138 lbs.), and Aaron Land (170 lbs.) earned third-place finishes in their respective brackets. Other notable performances included Jayden Glover (108 lbs.), Jayvyn Johnson (138 lbs.), Jordan Glover (108 lbs.), Brandon Caceres (190 lbs.), Kenny Ochoa (190 lbs.), and Javier Soledad (215 lbs.).
In their third tournament of the season at Sachem North High School’s Joe Davidson Memorial Tournament, Jack Meyer achieved his 100th career win while he and Josiah Lors captured individual championships for the third consecutive tournament. David Barrera finished third in his bracket with Caleb Holmes, David Gonzalez, Jayvyn Johnson, and Aaron Land also placing.
The Colonials hold a 3-2 League I record this season with victories over Walt Whitman by 38-23 at home; Brentwood by 34-28 on the road; and Central Islip by 44-25 on the road. The team is preparing for upcoming league matches and championship tournaments.
The final League I regular-season match against Riverhead will take place on January 8 followed by two more tournaments: the 39th Annual Kujan Brothers’ Memorial Tournament on January 18 and Deer Park Duals on January 25.
