A student from the William Floyd Learning Center, Jeremy Pelaez, has achieved second place in the Brookhaven Town recycling poster contest. The contest, titled "Brookhaven Recycles," is a new initiative aimed at encouraging young artists to promote recycling and environmental awareness through art.

Jeremy Pelaez, a fifth-grader in Sandra Bretton's art class, was awarded for his creative efforts with a framed copy of his poster and a certificate of recognition. His artwork will be showcased at Brookhaven Town Hall and featured on the town's website, social media platforms, and in the winter edition of Brookhaven’s Green Gazette newsletter.

The contest offered two themes for participants: “Recycle Every Day!” and “Stop Litter!” These themes were designed to inspire students to think critically about recycling everyday items and being mindful when disposing of waste. Many students incorporated Curby, the Town of Brookhaven's recycling mascot, into their colorful designs.

The competition saw numerous entries from William Floyd Learning Center students under Sandra Bretton's guidance. Participants included Jeremy Pelaez along with Elijah Ross, Ethan Ross, Liam Cordova Once, Preslee Ancona, Riley DeMillio, Travis Hamilton, and Aliyah Amaya. Additionally, Amanda Maertz’s class at Moriches Elementary School contributed 16 student artworks.
