From a young age, Professor Jerome Zhengrong Liang was fascinated by the mysteries of the universe. His interest extended to human biology, drawing comparisons between its complex workings and the vast balance of the cosmos.

“At the fundamental level, we cannot measure precisely what constitutes the universe or its true scale,” said Professor Liang. “Yet, we are compelled to explore why life begins at the molecular level within this universal architecture.” To investigate these questions, Liang turned to medical imaging.

Liang is a prominent scientist at Stony Brook Medicine and a professor in several disciplines including radiology and biomedical engineering. He has made significant contributions to medical imaging with a focus on cancer detection. His work in early cancer detection using non-invasive imaging techniques has advanced early diagnosis efforts, particularly for colorectal cancer.

One of his major achievements is developing virtual colonoscopy as an alternative to traditional methods. This technique allows screening for colorectal polyps, improving early cancer detection.

“Many patients feel apprehension about undergoing a traditional colonoscopy,” Professor Liang noted. “I was determined to develop a virtual protocol, through extensive research, that my colleagues could adopt to reduce this patient anxiety.”

Further details on Liang's work can be found on the Intellectual Property Partners website.
