Rep. Nick LaLota, representing New York's 1st congressional district, announced his support for H.R. 27, the Halt All Lethal Trafficking (HALT) of Fentanyl Act. The legislation aims to enhance law enforcement's capabilities in prosecuting traffickers and imposing stricter penalties on those distributing fentanyl.
LaLota expressed concern over the impact of fentanyl on Long Island families, stating: "Too many Long Island families have been devastated by the fentanyl crisis, and it’s past time for bold action." He emphasized his commitment to addressing this issue with bipartisan efforts and noted that passing the HALT Fentanyl Act would provide necessary tools to combat these substances.
The bill proposes to permanently classify all fentanyl-related substances under Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). This classification is currently temporary and set to expire on December 31, 2024. The act also aims to expedite research into these substances by simplifying registration processes for researchers.
The HALT Fentanyl Act aligns with recommendations made by the Office of National Drug Control Policy in September 2021. It suggests placing fentanyl analogues permanently into Schedule I of the CSA while allowing exemptions when evidence supports it.
In May 2023, the White House issued a Statement of Administration Policy endorsing H.R. 467 HALT Fentanyl Act.
