Two members of the William Floyd girls' wrestling team have qualified for the state championships following their performances at the Suffolk County Championships. Junior Veronica-Sky Williams became the first in school history to win a county championship in girls' wrestling, competing in the 145 lbs. weight class. Her teammate, Jaylee Itzep-Escobar, secured a second-place finish in the 126 lbs. category.
Both athletes will now compete in the inaugural New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Girls’ Wrestling Championships held at MVP Arena in Albany, NY.
The girls’ varsity wrestling team includes student-athletes from several schools: William Floyd, Bellport, Riverhead, Longwood, Patchogue-Medford, Sayville, and Bayport-Blue Point. They completed their inaugural season tied for first place with a 6-2 overall record as one of five combined teams participating in Section XI’s first-ever varsity girls’ wrestling season.
Sophomore Samantha Blair also represented William Floyd on this team alongside juniors Jaylee Itzep-Escobar and Veronica-Sky Williams.
"Congratulations to these talented student-athletes," said a representative from the school. "Best of luck in states!"
