Congressman Nick LaLota of Suffolk County has expressed his commitment to fiscal responsibility following his vote in favor of the House Budget Resolution. This resolution is a procedural measure that sets the stage for future budget reconciliation negotiations, aiming to address key issues such as tax relief and Medicaid reforms.
"I voted YES on last night’s House Budget Resolution because it’s a critical step toward lowering taxes, cutting spending, and protecting vital programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. While this resolution doesn’t directly make those changes, it paves the way for a future budget reconciliation vote that will bring real results,” said LaLota. “I’ll continue to support this effort if it raises the SALT cap, extends the AMT fix, keeps taxes low, and strengthens Medicaid by removing fraud, waste, and abuse. These are the priorities that matter to Suffolk County, and I’m committed to fighting for them."
The Budget Resolution serves as a framework for upcoming fiscal discussions but does not itself alter tax rates or spending levels. It is designed to facilitate detailed debates on significant issues such as Medicaid reform and potential adjustments to the SALT deduction.
With national debt reaching $36 trillion and an annual deficit of $2 trillion, this resolution aims to promote responsible federal budgeting practices. It prepares Congress for crucial policy decisions while ensuring priority issues receive comprehensive consideration.
LaLota's voting record reflects his dedication to government accountability. In December 2024, he supported the bipartisan American Relief Act which extended federal funding through March 14, 2025. This act provided essential support for troops and safeguarded Social Security.
In February 2024, LaLota backed a continuing resolution aimed at funding government operations while appropriations bills were being finalized. His opposition to government shutdowns underscores his commitment to maintaining federal services.
In November 2023, he voted in favor of H.R. 6363—the Further Continuing Appropriations Act—to prevent a government shutdown and ensure military personnel received their pay.
LaLota has also introduced legislation focused on fiscal responsibility. In January 2025, he proposed the Troops Before Politicians Act which suggests withholding congressional pay during periods when military personnel are unpaid.
Additionally, in November 2023 LaLota co-sponsored the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act requiring Congress members remain in Washington until all spending bills are completed.
